About the area...

Kiruna is the northernmost city in Sweden and the center of the Lapland iron-mining region, in the winter Kiruna is an excellent center for sports including skiing and dog sledding set amongst vast areas of woodland and wilderness with mountains and vast lakes only a few hours drive away. In the summer there is 24 hour daylight and in winter the polar night lasts for a month whilst the Northern lights flicker over head.

Jukkasjärvi is located 200km north of the Arctic Circle, in the heart of Swedish Lapland, a region inhabited by the Sami and is just a short drive from the airport in Kiruna. The village has a Lappmuseum the picturesque wooden church in the village is well known for its wall paintings. There is an excellent restaurant serving local cuisine and of course the world famous ice hotel...

Ice Hotel a hotel made entirely from ice and snow! Built each December with ice from the Torne river whose shaw the hotel sits on, The design of the Ice Hotel is never the same twice but always contains the famous Absolut Ice Bar and an Ice Chapel often used for weddings.

Temperatures outside may dip down to -40°C but inside the Icehotel the bar and bedrooms maintain a "comfortable" -5°C, each April the whole structure begins to melt back into the Torne River and the cycle begins again.

The Northern Lights or Aurora are one of the most fascinating and beautiful natural phenomena in the world, these lights can be seen from the polar regions from autumn through to spring on most clear nights.

During exceptional periods of activity the Aurora can cover the whole sky and light up the ground, flashing colours from green to red with pinks and blues added to the mix.
