Special "real men don't brake"

April, 6th of 2009, Taisto Thorneus – owner and general manager of Lapland Wilderness Tours – set up an unforgettable moment in the history of dog sledding: As first human ever Taisto passed the border from Norway into Russia by dogsled – another milestone in more than 30 years of active dog sledding for Taisto.
Since not every sleddog fits the demands of professional racing, we have decided to offer you an experience with real top-dogs: From winter 2009 / 2010 you will have the exclusive chance to drive your own sled powered by his original high class racing dogs !

Itinerary:

We pick you up from your hotel in Kiruna and drive you to our sleddog kennel. Here you get fully dressed with warm winter clothes (Overall, boots, mittens, cap) and get a short introduction how to drive a dogteam. For your safety a guide will join you on a separate sled and you take off for a real highspeed event of min. 60 Km. Lunch will be served “on trail” and in the evening you will get a transfer back to your hotel.

If you want to enjoy this experience more intense and want to get a deeper insight into how to treat real racing dogs (to feed, to rest, and… maybe you even want to howl with the team under the northern lights), we recommend our

Overnight tour

In this case you would travel min 120 Km with our racing team and spend the night in a rustic wilderness cabin. Your guide would teach and involve you in taking care about “your” team between the long runs. Warm clothing is included and full boarding on the trail and in the camp. At the end of day 1 you will have access to a wood-heated sauna.

Price: € 1250,00

Both tours are to realize even for single travelers, but – please remember that not every sleddog is a racing dog and so the access to this tours are limited – book in time ! The income of these two tours will be used to support our racing activities.

Taisto Thorneus

Taisto Thorneus owner and operator of Lapland Wilderness Tours, native of northern Scandinavia, speaks English and Finish as well as Swedish and has a long experience in the sub-arctic wilderness. With over 25 years as a professional guide and tour operator, he has won numerous national and international sled dog races and made a 1700 km sled dog expedition across the Scandinavian moutain range in 1983. The longest such trip on Europes mainland at that time. He is a pioneer in developing sled dog tours for the enjoyment of many thousands of clients.
